Welcome to the Department of Civil Engineering, a discipline often regarded as the oldest and most diverse branch of Engineering with practice commencing between 4000 and 2000 B.C. in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia (ancient Iraq). Ever since, Civil Engineering is associated with planning, design, construction and maintenance of physically and naturally built environment. With Sir Visvesvaraya Mokshagundam setting up highest bench marks for the Civil Engineering community in this country, the onus of development rests on present and future civil engineering professionals.

At The New Horizons Institute of Technology the Department of Civil Engineering, thriving under the aegis of WBSCT & VE & SD, aims to carry forward this legacy and provide the dynamic workforce to lead country’s development.

Through its wide spectrum of core and elective courses at each level, the department aims to develop both scientific and professional expertise. The undergraduate curriculum is designed to mould students into excellent professional engineers at international level by exposing them to different aspects of Civil Engineering (Environmental Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Water Resource Engineering and Transportation Engineering). The department has highly skilled and experienced faculties, technical staffs with diverse background to nurture the talent of students and for defining new horizons.

Apart from this, the state-of-art laboratory facilities and adequate computational power will ensure the all-round development of our students. Keeping in mind the importance of industrial interaction and understanding of practical problems, various workshops and industrial trainings are being organized at regular intervals during the course. The students with their vibrant academic background and first-hand industrial experience will also be mentored to tackle problems faced by industry.

This well-rounded educational experience helps civil engineers in modern planning, designing and constructing with latest technologies and maintaining facilities which are essential elements of modern-day life such as building construction, highways, dams, railways, bridges, irrigation systems, planned water supply systems, building modern township etc. Such an opportunity for exploration provides students the chance to pursue a range of intellectual interests resulting in greater professional success and deeper personal satisfaction.


To provide technical education consistent with the demands of infrastructural needs in both rural and urban area as well as industry in all disciplines of civil engineering by developing a conductive teaching-learning environment.


  • To produce civil engineers who can handle the multiple responsibilities of analysis, estimate, small-scale design and construction of traditional and modern structures as per I.S codes. 
  • To produce civil engineers who can face the challenges encountered in the field of environment, water resource, transport, urban planning, remote sensing and surveying. 
  • To impart education based on functional design, computer-based analysis, field work problems with relevant standards, execution of housing, industrial, irrigation and environmental structures pertaining to I.S codes. 
  • To motivate the students for acquiring higher education and to take the venture of self-entrepreneurship.



             The program educational objectives (PEOs) for N.H.I.T. diploma program of Civil Engineering Department is being incorporated in accordance with Vision & Mission of the department as well as of the institute. The PEOs being developed for continual improvement to meet the requirements of the stakeholders are:

PEO 1:

To prepare students who can excel in their professional career or higher education by acquiring knowledge in engineering principles related to civil engineering.

PEO 2:

To prepare students who can analyse any real life problem related to construction, design, estimate study of drawing and work supervision. 

PEO 3:

To prepare students with effective collaborators, innovators in terms of societal, technical & engineering challenges.
